Your civilization’s gold per turn, shown within the Civ 6 yield bar at the top of the game’s interface, is its total gold revenue minus its costs. Maintaining a profitable civilization is crucial, and the more gold per turn, the better. Here are some Civilization 6 tips and tricks for increasing gold per turn.
Build the Big Ben Wonder
Big Ben is the best wonder in the game for boosting your civilization’s economy. Building this wonder will increase your civilization’s gold per turn by +6. It gives you an extra economic card slot for selecting an additional gold-boosting policy. Plus, this wonder doubles the overall amount of gold in your treasury. Thus, Big Ben is a must-have economic wonder for any civilization.
Select the Levée En Masse Policy Card
Levée En Masse is a decent policy card you should select for cutting military costs, which will also increase your gold per turn. This card reduces unit maintenance costs by -2 when selected. That doesn’t sound much, but for 20 units, this amounts to a significant -40 gold cost reduction. The Levée En Masse cost reduction effectively increases your gold per turn by a proportional amount.
Establish More Seaside Resorts
Many players add seaside resorts to tiles to boost tourism. However, these resorts can also be great economic boosters. Seaside resorts generate gold equal to their tiles’ appeal values, which are at least four for breathtaking. Each seaside resort can typically generate between +4 and +8 gold per turn. Thus, establishing a larger number of resorts in your civilization can add to a big gold per turn boost, especially when you pay more attention to tile value.
Trade Your Luxury Resources
Enhancing luxury resources tiles in your civilization will enable you to trade their commodities. Trading commodities is a good way to temporarily boost your gold per turn for a limited number of turns. To boost gold per turn in this way, offer trade deals to civilizations via the diplomacy screen. Then, select a luxury resource to trade to set a satisfactory gold per turn price for it. If the other civilization accepts the trade offered, your gold per turn will increase by the set amount until the deal expires.
Establish More Coastal Cities
Coastal cities are generally more lucrative than landlocked ones for two reasons. Firstly, because their coastal tiles have a base yield of +1 gold and +1 food. Secondly, coastal cities enable you to build Harbor districts and buildings in them, which have lucrative gold adjacency bonuses. Plus, Harbor buildings like Lighthouse and Seaport also generate additional gold. So, establishing more coastal cities with Harbor districts added to them is a good way to boost your civilization’s gold per turn.
Expand Your Trade Routes
Expanding trade routes can be one of the best ways to boost gold per turn in Civilization 6, certainly when boosted with policy cards. Build more Commercial Hub districts to increase the number of trade routes you can establish. Then, push out more trader units to the most lucrative gold yield routes you can select.
Trade routes can be very lucrative with the Triangular Trade and Ecommerce policy cards selected. Select the Free Market Card
The Free Market policy card is one of the best economic boosters in the game that increases gold from Commercial Hub buildings by 100%. Thus, this card effectively doubles the amount of gold your Commercial Hub buildings generate when selected. So, Free Market is a great card to select for an economic boost.
Add Kurgans, Great Walls, and Châteaus to Tiles
If you’re playing with a China, France, or Scythian, make sure you add their gold-spinning Kurgans, Great Walls, and Châteaus to your cities’ tiles. Those tile improvements generate +1 to +3 gold for tiles they’re added to. For example, the Kurgan always generates +3 gold, which would amount to +30 for 10 added to tiles. Adding many such unique improvements to tiles can result in a significant gold per turn boost.
Send More Envoys to Economic City-States
Economic city-states can also give your civilization a handy gold boost when you send more envoys to them. Sending envoys to economic city states can increase each Commercial Hub district’s gold yields by up to +8 within your civilization. To make them even more lucrative, select the Merchant Confederation policy card that gives you +1 gold for each of your city-state envoys.
Cut Your Army Down to Size
All military units have maintenance costs that reduce your gold per turn. So, cutting your army down to size by disbanding unneeded units will also increase gold per turn. You should certainly disband a few units whenever your gold per turn is negative for the sake of balancing a budget. However, don’t get too carried away with disbanding units because scrapping your military will leave you vulnerable to attack by other civilizations.
