Hogwarts Legacy has earned over $1 billion in sales

Hogwarts Legacy, the open-world, action RPG set in the Harry Potter universe has cast a spell on gamers around the world; according to the latest Warner Bros. Discovery earnings report, Hogwarts Legacy has earned over $1 billion in sales as well as sold over 15 million units worldwide to date.

“Hogwarts Legacy has amassed more than $1 billion in retail sales and over 15 million units sold worldwide to date, and today the team is launching the game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms,” said Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav during the company’s most recent earnings report, which covers the time period from the game’s February launch to March 31st.

The company has called Hogwarts Legacy the “largest release of all time for Warner Bros.” and the best-selling game year-to-date,” with the $1 billion in retail sales accounting for 9.3% of the company’s earnings.

“This is our fifth $1 billion-plus gaming franchise alongside Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, our Lego games and DC, and there’s lots more games coming, including Hogwarts Legacy on Switch later this year,” Zaslav added.

Hogwarts Legacy seemed primed for success shortly after its February 10th release for the Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC platforms, as it sold over 12 million copies in the first two weeks alone and accrued $850 million in that time span as well.

In addition to releasing Hogwarts Legacy for the Xbox One and PS4, Warner Bros. Discovery is looking forward to releasing the game for the Nintendo Switch as well, with the latter being particularly exciting in terms of the high hopes for the Harry Potter-based game in the Japanese market.

“We see that as probably a much bigger install base and a fan base that, as relates to the franchise of Harry Potter, which obviously appeals to a very big audience globally, and in markets like Japan where Nintendo has a big footprint and Harry Potter skews very strongly in terms of popularity, we see a much bigger upside probably from that release, certainly than the Gen 8 [release],” said JB Perrette, CEO of global streaming and games.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
