How to Turbocharge Civ 6 Builders in Civilization 6

Builders are the most important units in Civilization 6 when it comes to increasing yields. Those are units with which you can build, repair, and remove tile improvements. They are the building blocks of empires with which you can add farms, mines, plantations, pastures, and much more to tiles with their charges. There are also numerous ways you can increase the number of things your Civ 6 builders can build and how many charges they have. This is how you can turbocharge your Civ 6 builders in Civilization 6.

Play as China (Qin Shi Huang)

One of the easiest ways to turbocharge Civ 6 Builders is to play as Qin Shi Huang of China. His First Emperor leader bonus gives each of your Builder units one additional charge. Chinese builders can also spend their charges to complete 15% production of the ancient and Classical era wonders of the world. So, Qin Shi Huang’s Builder units are turbocharged from the outset.

Play as Montezuma (Aztec)

Aztec is a civilization with a civ ability that enhances builders. The Aztec Legend of the Five Suns civ ability enables you to spend Builder charges on completing 20% of a district’s production cost. Thus, that unique ability enables you to boost district production with Civ 6 Builder units.

Build the Pyramids Wonder

The Pyramid Wonder grants your Builder units an extra build charge. So, building that wonder gives your Builders four charges. Then you can add more improvements to your tiles with Civ 6 Builders throughout a game.

Select the Serfdom/Public Works Policy Cards

The easiest way to turbocharge your Civ 6 Builder units is to select the Serfdom or Public Works policy cards by researching the Serfdom or Civil Engineering civics. Both cards give your newly recruited Civ 6 Builder units two additional charges. Plus, the Public Works card gives your Civilization a 30% production boost for Builders.

Select the Monumentality Card

The Monumentality card is a Golden Age policy card you can select when playing the Dramatic Ages game mode. That card gives your Civ 6 Builder units a +2 movement bonus, which will enable them to move across the map faster. Selecting that policy card also gives you a 30% reduction for purchasing Builders with faith and gold.

Recruit Builders From a City That Includes Liang

The Liang governor from Rise and Fall has a default Guildmaster promotion. That promotion gives each of your Builder units a +1 build charge. However, you must recruit the Builder units from the city that includes Liang for that promotion effect to apply to them.

Liang has a couple of promotions you can select that enhance Civ 6 Builder units. The Parks and Recreation promotion enables your Builders to add City Parks to tiles. Those City Park tile improvements generate tourism and +1 culture yields.

The Aquaculture promotion enables you to add Fishery improvements to coastal tiles with your Civ 6 Builder units. That tile improvement provides a +1 food yield, with additional bonuses for adjacent sea resources. It also has a +1 production and +0.5 housing bonus if Liang is in the city.

Research Technologies for More Tile Improvements

The primary way to expand your Civ 6 Builder options is to research technologies. New technologies enable you to add more alternative tile improvements with Builders. Some also enable you to modify terrain features with your Builders. These are the best technologies to research for turbocharging Civilization 6 Builders.

  • Mining
  • Animal Husbandry
  • Irrigation
  • Masonry
  • Bronze Working
  • Machinery
  • Conservation
  • Plastics
  • Predicative Systems
  • Composites
  • Satellites

Mining, Animal Husbandry, and Irrigation are three crucial early-game techs for turbocharging Builder units. Technologies like Conservation enable your Civ 6 Builder units to add woods to tiles. You can add Wind Farms and Solar Farms, which enhance city production, with Builders by researching Composites and Satellites.

Note that there are also numerous civilizations with unique tile improvements you can unlock for Civ 6 Builders by researching certain technologies. For example, researching Shipbuilding unlocks the Kampung for Indonesia. These are some of the unique civilization tile improvements you can unlock with certain technologies:

  • France: Château
  • China: Great Wall
  • Inca: Terrace Farm
  • Nubia: Nubian Pyramid
  • Scythia: Kurgan
  • Mekewap: Cree
  • Sumeria: Ziggurat
  • Persia: Pairidaeza

Establish Suzerains in City-States

Numerous suzerain city-state bonuses enable you to add more tile improvements with Civ 6 Builder units. For example, Colossal Heads is a tile improvement that generates faith yields and tourism you can unlock by establishing a suzerain in La Venta. These are city-states with suzerain bonuses that give you more Builder options:

  • Cahokia: Cahokia Mounds
  • Rapa Nui: Moais
  • Nazca: Nazca Lines
  • Granada: Alcázars
  • Caguana: Bateys
  • Armagh: Monasteries
  • Samarkand: Trading Domes
  • Rapa Nui: Moais

So, there are quite a few ways you can turbocharge your Civ 6 Builders in Civilization 6. You can potentially increase the number of charges your Builders have to eight with the right combination of civilization, policy card, wonder, and governor. Researching required technologies and establishing certain suzerains in city-states will considerably increase the range of options your Builders have.
