The Super Mario Galaxy movie is the sequel to the box office smash hit Super Mario Bros animated film. Nintendo revealed a first glimpse of that movie with a November 2025 video, which showed the Bowser Jr. and Rosalina characters. Now, the big N has recently uploaded another Mario Galaxy film trailer in January 2026. That video confirms what many rumors have speculated: that Yoshi will be in the movie.
A Nintendo Direct stream revealed the latest Super Mario Galaxy movie trailer. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto introduced that trailer, as he did in the Nintendo Direct stream for the November video. The beginning of that video shows Mario and Luigi arriving at an underground tomb to fix a troubled pipe. They remove rocks from the pipe to find a dinosaur that initially scares them. Yoshi then reveals himself to the plumbers.
What we see after that is Yoshi hanging out with Mario and Luigi. Toad asks, “Ah, who is this?” Toad then says, “So, some dinosaur just shows up, and he’s now part of the group.”
Miyamoto provided some insight into the history of Yoshi during the Nintendo Direct stream for the Super Mario Galaxy movie. Yoshi is Mario’s dinosaur sidekick, who has been a big character in Nintendo’s biggest game franchise since the 1990s. He first appeared in the Super Mario Bros SNES game as a dinosaur Mario could ride on and gobble up enemies with. Super Mario World 2 and Mario Galaxy 2 are also Nintendo games that include Yoshi.
Aside from Yoshi, the new trailer reveals there will be a huge T. rex in the film. That T. rex roars at Yoshi and Toad in the video, sending them fleeing for cover. The T. rex in the trailer looks like the large dinosaur from Super Mario Odyssey.

Birdo also appears in the latest Super Mario Galaxy movie trailer. That is a one of the bosses from the Super Mario Bros 2 NES game who shoots eggs. Birdo spits eggs at Prince Peach, who deflects them with her umbrella in the movie clip.
Chris Melendari of Illumination appeared in the latest Nintendo Direct stream for the Super Mario Galaxy movie. He confirmed animations for the film to be complete, with the Super Mario Galaxy movie now in post production stage. Illumination is now finalizing the sound design and music for the movie, featuring a 70-piece orchestra.
Illumination and Nintendo had previously set an April 3 release date for the Super Mario Galaxy movie. The end of the trailer confirms a new April 1 cinema release date for the movie. So, the latest Mario movie is only a couple of months away, and the inclusion of Yoshi and a T. rex will give it a more Jurassic theme.
