Star Fox (also known as Starwing in Europe) is a Nintendo game series that began on the Super NES during the 1990s. Nintendo then released Star Fox 64 on the N64, a highly rated sequel to the original. Velan Studios has recently launched a Star Fox remake for the Switch 2 this June, which is one of the more eagerly anticipated games of the year even if it’s not an original title.
Nintendo first revealed the Star Fox remake during a May 2026 Direct broadcast. That video confirmed Star Fox to be a remake of the N64 SF game. It included game footage of Fox, Peppy, Slippy, and Falco characters flying in their Arwing fighters.
For those not familiar with the Star Fox game series, it is Nintendo’s sci-fi franchise based on animal pilots engaged in aerial space combat in defence of the Lylat System. That game series had several primary additions up until 2017, but had been rather neglected since then. Rather than bring out an all-new Star Fox game for the Switch 2, Nintendo decided to co-develop a Star Fox 64 remake in partnership with Velan Studios.
Although this latest Star Fox game is not strictly new, it is a significant reimagining of the original SF 64 that almost makes it look like a fresh addition to its franchise. This Star Fox remake has completely overhauled visuals. The remake has clearly shifted away from the blocky polygon aesthetic of the original to embrace a realistic art style. It also incorporates completely rebuilt character and ship models.
So, what we have here is a Star Fox remake with terrific, revamped 4K visuals on the Switch 2. This remake features almost identical stage layouts from the original. The core gameplay mechanics from the original, such as its barrel rolls and charge rolls, also remain firmly intact.
Yet, this new Star Fox remake offers somewhat more than just modernized graphics. It includes more cinematic story presentation with expanded character prologue and a more polished orchestral soundtrack. Full voice acting and overhauled scripts expand the cutscenes in-between missions.
Velan Studios has also overhauled the game’s multiplayer modes for online play. This Star Fox remake incorporates four vs. four dogfights across three maps. Its single-player campaign includes a new co-op mode with one player as a pilot and another as a gunner. Star Fox also has a new objective-based Challenge Mode for replaying missions completed from the single-player campaign.
So, this Star Fox remake almost looks like a completely new game on the Switch 2. It will certainly be a completely new game for the many players not familiar with the original Star Fox 64. However, those who are will no doubt love the new graphical style and features of this remake. This SF remake is out now and retailing at $49.99 (for the digital edition).
