Nintendo Confirms Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake

Nintendo released the original Zelda: Ocarina of Time in 1998 for the Nintendo 64. That first 3D Zelda game was a gaming masterpiece. Nintendo later launched an Ocarina of Time remake for the 3DS in 2011. Now the big N has officially confirmed there will be an Ocarina of Time remake for the Switch 2 with a reveal trailer.

There have been months of speculation and rumours that Nintendo was cooking up another Ocarina of Time remake. NateTheHate, a prominent video game podcaster renowned for his reliable leaks, revealed in a March Reddit post that there was a remake for Ocarina of Time in the works. His leaks sparked much speculation, which recent June Nintendo Direct videos have confirmed true.

The big N revealed there will be an Ocarina of Time remake in a long 55-minute Nintendo Direct video. That video is packed full of previews for upcoming Nintendo games. At the very end of that video, there is a short, cinematic clip for the upcoming remastered Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which you can watch below.

That clip starts with a cinematic narrator, who recounts the creation of Hyrule. It includes an ornate animated tapestry that shows the Golden Goddesses, the Triforce creation, and Hyrule Castle. Then we see a young Link lying within his treehouse.

Alas, this video trailer does not reveal much about the Ocarina of Time remake without any gameplay footage included. What we do know about this remake is that it will be a full ground-up reimagining of the game for the Switch 2, rather than just a partial gloss over. The trailer highlights there will be a shift to a more realistic art style for this remake, which contrasts with what we’ve seen in Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild. Thus, this remake’s art direction will move away from cel-shaded graphics for a more realistic look with high-fidelity rendering.

This game’s release also coincides with the ongoing Zelda 40th anniversary celebrations in 2026. The official Zelda anniversary date was February 21, 2026. The video includes 2026 at the end, which confirms Nintendo plans to release the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake later this year. Nintendo has not confirmed a specific release date for the game, but a pre-Black Friday (November) launch is likely without any unforeseen delays.

Zelda fans will no doubt be delighted to hear that one of the most highly-rated games in history will soon be available to play on the Switch 2. The original Ocarina of Time is an enduring classic because of its immersive Hyrule Field world, brilliant dungeon design, and compelling narrative. It set a 3D adventure blueprint for action RPG games to emulate.

What June’s general Nintendo Direct video shows is that there are many exciting upcoming Switch 2 games, such as Rayman Legends Retold, Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Final Fantasy Resonance, and Star Fox. However, the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is perhaps the most eagerly anticipated Switch 2 game of the year. This remake will give Ocarina of Time a dazzling new graphical look and probably include some new gameplay features to boot.
