Although Grand Theft Auto VI is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated games of all time, let’s not forget about another beloved Rockstar franchise that has fans quietly hoping for a sequel: Red Dead Redemption.
The big question remains: will there ever be a Red Dead Redemption 3? Former Rockstar co-founder and writer Dan Houser seems to think it’s possible. However, he’s noted a key distinction between the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead series: while each GTA entry tells a completely new, self-contained story, the Red Dead games are deeply connected through recurring central figures like Arthur Morgan and John Marston. Houser thinks that a Red Dead Redemption 3 would be in many ways bittersweet because of how connected and fulfilling the Red Dead story is.

“Each of the [Grand Theft Auto] games was kind of a standalone story. It’s not quite the same,” Houser explained on the Lex Fridman Podcast. “I think it probably would be, in some ways, sadder if someone continued on Red Dead, because it was a [conclusive] two-game arc. That might be more sad to hear someone working on that.”
Houser admits that there probably will be a Red Dead Redemption 3 given the immense popularity of the Red Dead franchise, though he no longer has any say in its future. “I don’t own the IP. That was part of the deal — it’s a privilege to work on these projects, but you don’t necessarily own them,” he added.
Roger Clark, the voice actor behind Arthur Morgan, has echoed Dan Houser’s sentiment when addressing the big question on every fan’s mind: will there be a Red Dead Redemption 3? Like Houser, Clark believes a sequel is a sure bet, although he doesn’t think he or Arthur should be involved as Arthur’s story has been told in definitive fashion.
I’m certain we will see RDR3 one day. When that will be – I have absolutely no idea. Don’t count on Arthur’s involvement either. His story has been told, I feel.

Will there be a Red Dead Redemption 3? While Rockstar Games hasn’t made anything official yet, the evidence — from Dan Houser’s comments to Roger Clark’s optimism — strongly suggests that another entry in the franchise is only a matter of time. With Grand Theft Auto VI taking center stage for now, fans may have to wait several years before hearing anything concrete.
