7 of the Best Atari Jaguar Games in History

The Atari Jaguar was a 1990s console flop that has a fascinating place in gaming history. Although it was a bit of a disaster for Atari, that doesn’t necessarily mean there weren’t any great Jaguar games. The few developers who effectively tapped into the console’s custom hardware released some groundbreaking Jaguar games. These best Atari Jaguar games showed what that makeshift 64-bit console could do.

Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein 3D was a game that revolutionized PC gaming with a pseudo-3D engine and run-and-gun action gameplay that set a blueprint for the first-person shooter genre. However, this game shone as one of the best Atari Jaguar games for how ID Software leveraged the console’s custom hardware to drastically enhance its visuals and sound. Jaguar’s Wolfenstein 3D was one of the best ports of the game, with its full-screen display, higher resolution, and rich 16-bit color palette.

The best way to play Wolfenstein 3D today without a Jaguar is to play the PC port. Wolfenstein 3D is retailing on Steam for about $4.99. That game is compatible with Windows 11/10 because it comes packaged with compatibility wrappers. However, the Jaguar port of Wolfenstein 3D was graphically superior to the PC Steam port, though it is not a remaster.

Doom

Doom was another of the most influential first-person shooters that ID Software ported to the Jaguar. It was one of the best console games in history because of its revolutionary 3D graphics engine, amazing multiplayer deathmatch, and fast-paced combat action. The Jaguar Doom was one of the smoothest full-screen versions of the game that outperformed many alternative ports.

You can play Doom today with the Doom Classic Bundle on Steam. That package includes the original Doom along with its sequel, D3, and D64 games. Alternatively, you can play the DOOM + DOOM II package, which includes enhanced versions of the first two games in the series.

Tempest 2000

Tempest 2000 was a masterful remake of the original 1981 Tempest arcade classic for the Jaguar. It was a game in which players blasted away waves of enemies around geometric 3D webs. This was one of the best Atari Jaguar games for how it combined the classic arcade gameplay from the original title with vibrant, pulsating wireframe 3D graphics. Its iconic techno dance music soundtrack pushed the Jaguar’s audio to the limits. It was a graphical and audio extravaganza that made the Jaguar worth purchasing despite that console’s shortcomings.

Rayman

Rayman is one of Ubisoft’s famous franchises that made its debut on the Atari Jaguar. This was a standout 2D platformer on the Jaguar because of its delightful hand-drawn animation and fluid camera work. The groundbreaking Rayman visuals on the Jaguar set it apart from the numerous 2D platformers on 16-bit consoles like the Genesis. It was a game with a lush, atmospheric soundtrack. Rayman offered a rich fairy-tale atmosphere and tricky platforming fun.

The best way to play Rayman today, without an original Jaguar console, is to check out Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition for PC, Switch, and PlayStation 5. That compilation pack enables you to play the Jaguar, PlayStation, MS-DOS, Game Boy Colour, and Game Boy Advance versions of Rayman. The Anniversary Edition also includes additional content, such as a Rayman documentary, reimagined soundtrack, and playable SNES prototype.

Alien vs Predator

Alien vs Predator was a landmark first-person shooter that included distinct Colonial Marine, stealthy Predator, and agile Alien campaigns. The unique three campaigns set this game apart from other first-person shooters like Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. Alien vs Predator was also among the best Atari Jaguar games because of its immersive design and advanced digitized visuals, with photorealistic textures that showcased the Jaguar’s superior graphical quality when compared to 16-bit consoles. Alien vs Predator was one good reason to check out Atari’s console as a Jaguar exclusive.

Iron Soldier

Iron Soldier was among the most defining Jaguar games for the 3D mech combat experience it offered. This was a game in which players could blow away buildings and military convoys within sprawling 3D polygon landscapes. The engaging 16-mission campaign, advanced destruction mechanics, deep weapon customization, and energetic soundtrack in Iron Soldier made it one of the best Atari Jaguar games.

NBA Jam: Tournament Edition

NBA Jam: Tournament Edition expanded the enthralling 2 vs 2 basketball with deep rosters and strategic player substitutions. This was undoubtedly the standout Jaguar sports game with its exaggerated gameplay, true tournament mode, fun Mortal Kombat fighter easter eggs, and iconic “On Fire” mechanic that defined NBA Jam. For many players, the Jaguar NBA Jam was the best home console iteration of the game because of its more detailed sprites, crisp arcade commentary, and blistering frame-rate performance.

For all its faults, the Atari Jaguar was undoubtedly a console with considerable potential for the few developers who gave it a chance. The best Atari Jaguar games above were among the finest titles of the 1990s era. Those seven games showed how the Jaguar could roar when serious developers gave the console the attention it deserved. However, the Jaguar didn’t offer enough top-notch games to sell it.
