World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is the fastest-selling PC game ever

Activision Blizzard announced on Tuesday that World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, the eighth and latest expansion for the long-running World of Warcraft MMORPG has become the fastest-selling PC game of all time.

After seeing its initial October 27th release date delayed for “further polish” and endgame refinement, World of Warcraft: Shadowlands launched on November 23rd. By day one, the expansion had sold over 3.7 million copies, breaking a record previously held by another Blizzard entity, Diablo III, which sold 3.5 million copies upon its release. World of Warcraft: Legion was also previously in the mix at 3.3 million copies sold upon release.

According to Activision Blizzard, player engagement is at its highest point in the last decade with World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. Some key takeaways from the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands sales press release include:

  • In the months leading up to the expansion’s release and the time since launch, the game reached and has sustained its highest number of players on monthly or longer-term subscriptions compared to the same period ahead of and following any WoW expansion in the past decade, in both the West and the East.
  • Players have spent more time in Azeroth year to date than in the same period of any of the last 10 years.
  • In addition, total player time in game this year to date has nearly doubled compared to the same period last year.

“It’s been a huge thrill to enter this whole-new dimension of the Warcraft universe together with millions of players around the world,” said J. Allen Brack, president of Blizzard Entertainment in the official World of Warcraft: Shadowlands sales press release. “It’s been equally rewarding to see players enjoying all of the new features and content in Shadowlands—whether they’re exploring new aspects of their characters with the Covenants or setting foot in WoW for the first time with the new-player experience in Exile’s Reach—and there’s much more to come.”

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
