The reason why Samus and other Nintendo characters haven’t been added to Fortnite

If you went back and read our Most Wanted Fortnite Collab Skins wishlist out of morbid curiosity, you’d notice that since that article was written back in December of 2022, most of the skins we’ve hoped for — the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Shredder, Solid Snake, Miles Morales and Michael Myers — have actually been added to the Epic’s uber-popular online game platform. Lucky us, right?

Well, all of the skins pretty much, except for one. Samus Aran.

And as we noted back then, the reason is that Nintendo is notoriously stringent with lending our their intellectual property if it isn’t on their terms. Case in point, Samus Aran from the iconic Metroid series, who apparently Epic Games contacted Nintendo to talk about adding to Fortnite‘s Gaming Legend series alongside such characters as Master Chief from Halo, Kratos from God of War and Lara Croft from Tomb Raider.

The reason why Samus and other Nintendo characters haven’t been added to Fortnite? Nintendo would have wanted Samus and other Nintendo characters to appear exclusively on the Nintendo Switch version of Fortnite, according to former Epic Games chief creative officer Donald Mustard in a recent interview with GameFile.

“They got really hung up on their characters showing up on platforms that weren’t their platforms,” Mustard said.

“They would be thrilled to have Nintendo characters in Fortnite, but just only if it’s on their platform.”

What do you think of the reason why Samus and other Nintendo characters haven’t been added to Fortnite? Do you think they should be added into the game if they’re only on the Nintendo Switch or should Nintendo concede and let the characters be playable across all platforms? Let us know in the comments.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
