“I celebrate Ciri as the main protagonist in The Witcher 4. If you think it’s woke, read the damn books,” Geralt voice actor says

The decision to go with Ciri as the main protagonist of The Witcher 4 instead of mainstay Geralt may be a cause of contention among some fans of the dark fantasy, action role-playing video game series but for others, the anticipation to play as a hero with a much different fighting style than Geralt and a different personality is promising rather than discouraging.

Count Geralt’s voice actor, Doug Cockle himself among the latter.

“It’s a cool character from the Witcher, and they’re gonna focus on that character,” he said during the latest episode of Fall Damage, in response to the transition to Ciri being disparaged as “woke.”

Cockle continued, “I think that’s awesome. You can’t just have Geralt for every single game for The Witcher ad nauseam through eternity.”

Cockle went on to explain that Geralt’s narrative saw a fulfilling conclusion in the “Blood and Wine” DLC and that the book series on which The Witcher is based has a plethora of storylines which aren’t Geralt-centric to form the framework of the new game’s narrative.

Cockle continued, “Celebrate Ciri, I celebrate her being the protagonist. So all you people who think it’s ‘woke’… If you read the books, then you understand why CD Projekt went down this avenue.

“There’s a whole rich world of stuff to explore with Ciri, that they didn’t do when they put her into Witcher 3, because the story was about Geralt. But she hints at it. If you think it’s woke, read the damn books – they’re good, first of all. And secondly, you won’t think it’s so woke anymore.”

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
