Gorgo was a Spartan queen from the Ancient Greek era. She is one of the few notable women to be documented in the official Ancient Greek histories. Gorgo is also one of two Greek leaders you can play in Civilization 6 (the other being Pericles). The Gorgo Civilization 6 leader is a slightly more militaristic Greek alternative to Pericles. This is a leader who offers cultural and military bonuses for players.
Gorgo’s Thermopylae Leader Bonus
The Thermopylae leader bonus gives you a culture for killing units. The amount of cultural yields you receive amounts to 50% of the combat strength of the eliminated unit. This leader bonus also gives all your units +1 combat strength for each of your government’s military card slots. For example, this would amount to +3 combat strength for three military card slots.
Greece’s Plato Republic Civ Ability
Greece’s Plato Republic ability is one additional Wildcard slot. This means you can select one more military, economic, or diplomatic card than usual when playing as the Gorgo Civilization 6 leader. That’s a very simple but also extremely valuable civ ability because the best policy cards offer significant advantages when selected.
Greece’s Unique Infrastructure and Units
Greece has the Acropolis district, which replaces the Theater Square. Like other unique districts, the production cost for the Acropolis is half that of the standard district it replaces. Each Acropolis gives you one additional envoy built. For example, you would receive five envoys for five Acropolis districts built in your civilization.
The Acropolis also has better district-adjacent bonuses than the standard Theater Square. Building an Acropolis beside a city center gives you a +1 culture bonus. Plus, you’ll receive another +1 culture yield bonus for placing an Acropolis beside another district.
Greece’s unique Hoplite unit is one of the best for early-game warfare. This unit has a standard melee attack of 28. However, the +10 Hoplite adjacency combat strength bonus makes this unit much stronger.
How to Win With the Gorgo Civilization 6 Leader
The Gorgo Civilization 6 leader’s unique infrastructure and units are among the best in the game for securing cultural or military (Domination) victories. Her Thermopylae leader bonus can come in handy for amassing culture and killing units. Greece’s Plato’s civ ability can also be very useful for all victory conditions, be it science, religion, war, or culture. So, it’s best to play for either a cultural or war victory condition with Gorgo.
If going for a cultural victory, the Acropolis must be at the heart of your strategy. Build the Acropolis in most of your cities to get more envoys. Then, send your envoys firstly to all cultural city-states you can to increase your cultural yields.
You can further increase your cultural yields by maximizing the Acropolis district’s adjacency bonus. Place your Acropolis districts on tiles where they’ll receive the best cultural yield adjacency bonuses. To further boost this, select the Aesthetics policy card that increases the Theater Square adjacency bonus.
You should also make the most of Gorgo’s additional policy card slot to secure a cultural victory. Select an additional policy card that increases cultural yields or tourism output. Policy cards like Heritage Tourism, Satellite Broadcasts, and Online Communities are among the best for boosting tourism.
The Thermopylae leader bonus can also help you amass more culture when pursuing a cultural victory. Note that you don’t necessarily need to declare war on other civilizations to get something from this bonus. You can also amass more culture with this leader bonus by killing barbarian units (which there are usually many of).
If you pursue the Domination victory when playing as the Gorgo Civilization 6 leader, make sure you select governments with the most military card slots. Doing this will maximize your military card slot combat bonus for wars. Oligarchy, Monarchy, and Fascism offer the most military card slots for their respective government tiers.
Aside from this, Greece’s extra wildcard slot can also come in handy for wars. Select an extra military card to assist you in wars. I recommend selecting military policy cards like Levee en Masse, Their Finest Hour, and Propaganda to help you in your wars.
You should also make the most of Greece’s Hoplites when fighting early-game wars. This early-game unit can make very light work of enemy cavalry units. Keep your Hoplite units close together so that you can capitalize on their +10 combat adjacency bonus.
So, I would certainly recommend the Gorgo Civilization 6 leader if you want to play for the cultural or militaristic victory conditions. Gorgo’s Acropolis infrastructure is a great district for securing cultural victories. The Thermopylae leader bonus and an additional military card are also big advantages to have for fighting wars.
