6 of the Best Leaders for Winning a Civilization 6 Domination Victory

The Civilization 6 Domination Victory condition is one you can obtain by capturing all the capital cities in a game. Thus, this is the victory condition for warmongering players to win games with military conquests. The first step to winning a military victory in Civ 6 is to select one of the best leaders for waging wars. Picking a more militaristic leader will give you a fighting chance. These are some of the best leaders for the Civilization 6 Domination Victory condition.

Frederick Barbarossa (German)

Frederick is one of the best leaders for winning a Civilization 6 Domination Victory mainly because of his Holy Roman Empire bonus. This bonus gives you an extra military card slot, which is valuable for waging wars. You can select an additional policy that will give you a military advantage with that extra card slot. Plus, the Holy Roman Empire also gives you a +7 combat strength bonus for fighting city-state units, which makes waging wars against them somewhat easier.

Germany’s unique Hansa district is also a good one to have for faster military unit production. That district is quicker to build and has better production adjacency bonuses. Building more Hansas will enable you to roll out military units quicker than most other civilizations.

Gorgo (Greek)

Gorgo is the more militaristic of the two Greek civilizations in the base Civ 6 game. She offers a decent Thermopylae leader bonus for combat. This bonus increases your unit combat strength by +1 for each military policy card. That can amount to a +6 combat bonus with six military policy cards selected for a Fascism government. Thermopylae also generates culture for units killed, which will enable you to unlock civics faster when fighting lots of wars.

Aside from her leader bonus, Gorgo also has a Plato’s Republic civ ability that gives you an additional wildcard policy card slot. A wildcard slot enables you to select any type of policy. So, you can use this card slot to select an additional military policy, which is all the more valuable for fighting wars.

Tomyris (Scythian)

Tomyris of Scythia is one of the most militaristic civilizations in the game, which makes her a great choice for the Civilization 6 Domination Victory condition. Her Killer of Cyrus leader bonus gives you +5 combat strength when attacking units with depleted health, which is a significant combat advantage. Furthermore, this bonus enables your units to regenerate health based on hit points when eliminating enemies.

The People of the Steppe Scythian civilization’s ability is among the best in the game for fighting wars. This ability gives you a duplicate copy of any light cavalry unit built. Thus, it is a civ ability that effectively enables you to recruit two light cavalry units for every one. You can expand your army somewhat faster with the Steppe Scythian civ ability.

Hoko Tokimune (Japanese)

Hoko Tokimune’s Divine Wind bonus makes him one of the best choices for the Civilization 6 Domination Victory. This bonus gives your units a +5 combat strength advantage on coastal and shallow water tiles. Exploiting that bonus to your advantage by fighting along the coasts will enable you to crush enemies. Divine Wind also enables you to build military Encampment districts in half the time.

The Meiji Restoration district adjacency civ ability is also a good one to have for boosting science, production, and gold yields. Increasing all such yields is important for players pursuing war victories. For example, the higher production adjacency yields Japanese Industrial districts generate will enable you to roll out military units faster.

Montezuma (Aztec)

Montezuma boasts one of the best leader bonuses in the game for securing the Civilization 6 Domination Victory condition. Gifts for the Tlatoani give your units a +1 combat strength bonus for each improved luxury resource tile in your civilization. For example, several improved luxury resource tiles will give your units a +7 combat strength boost. This leader bonus can make your military quite unstoppable by increasing civilization border expansion.

The Aztec Eagle Warrior is also one of the best, unique early game units with which to wage war. It is a vastly superior upgrade on the Warrior it with a melee attack rating of 28. Plus, this unit has a +5 combat strength bonus when fighting anti-cavalry units, such as Spearman, for example. The Builders you receive from units the Aztec Eagle Warrior defeats will also come in handy for boosting city yields during the early game.

Victoria (English)

Victoria offers some notable military and economic advantages that make her a good choice for winning a Civilization 6 Domination Victory. Her Pax Britannica leader bonus gives you a free melee unit for each city founded or Royal Dockyard built outside your capital city’s continent. This can be an invaluable bonus to capitalize on for military expansion if you can get a good foothold on a secondary continent.

The unique Royal Navy Dockyard infrastructure is quicker to build and provides a gold yield bonus on foreign continents. This district synergises with the Pax Britannica leader bonus, as building more Dockyards on foreign continents will also expand your military. You can invest the extra gold this district generates in unit upgrades when necessary. Plus, units built at Royal Navy Dockyard cities also receive a +1 movement bonus that enhances their mobility.

Victoria of England is also a leader with two, rather than one, unique military units. You can recruit the Redcoats to take cities and build Sea Dogs for naval bombardment support. The Redcoast is an especially strong, unique unit when fighting on foreign continents with its +10 combat strength bonus.

So, take your pick from those leaders for winning a Civilization 6 Domination Victory. Those are the best war leaders in the base Civilization 6 game, but there are other good alternatives available in the Civ 6 expansion packs. The Civ 6 leaders above offer some of the best military bonuses, unique units, civ abilities, and infrastructure for waging war.
