One of the biggest names attached to Sandfall Interactive’s critically acclaimed and wildly successful dark fantasy RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is Daredevil star Charlie Cox. Despite voicing one of the game’s central characters, Gustav, Cox has never actually played it. A self-confessed non-gamer, he hasn’t picked up a controller in decades—and he’d need to buy a console first. How long has it been? Try the 1990s, back when a certain mustachioed plumber was stomping Goombas on a 64-bit console originally known by a different name.
Despite this—and despite feeling like a “total fraud” for receiving so much praise after spending just “about four hours” in the studio voicing Gustav—Cox still recognizes the artistry and creativity behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and says he genuinely wants to give the game a try.

“I remember being in the studio and thinking, ‘This is beautiful, the visuals are extraordinary,” Cox said at a recent Q&A session at GalaxyCon in New Orleans. “They’ve come a long way since Mario 64,’ which is probably the last computer game I played.”
Cox reiterated, “I wanna play the game. I need to play the game. I need to get a console first. I feel like a fraud because I just did the voice. But it’s so cool, I’m so happy for these guys. They’re not like, a big company that makes a ton of games. And I hear it’s a front-runner to win game of the year, it’s really cool.”
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a narrative-rich, turn-based RPG with real-time combat elements, set in a dark fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque–era France. Developed by the small, indie-budget team at French studio Sandfall Interactive, the game has far exceeded expectations—earning universal critical acclaim, selling millions of copies within weeks, and drawing lasting industry attention for its ties to art, emotional depth, and bold design.
The game has also earned praise for its challenging enemies, robust endgame content—which offers plenty to do even after the final boss—and its deep, intricate gameplay systems. Features like Pictos — equippable items that enhance character stats and grant unique passive abilities — add further strategic depth and replayability.
Are you surprised that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Voice Actor Charlie Cox admits he still hasn’t played the game, despite voicing Gustav? Do you think he’ll enjoy the game as much as he enjoyed his last video game, Super Mario 64?
