A Guide to Playing as the Wilfrid Laurier Civ 6 Canada Leader in Civilization 6

Wilfrid Laurier was a long-serving prime minister of Canada who established new transcontinental railways and the settlement of the Canadian West. He is also one of the leaders you can select to play as in Civilization 6. This Civ 6 Canada leader is a good choice for players who prefer to pursue a more peaceful strategy for winning games with diplomatic or cultural victories.

Wilfrid’s Last Best West Leader Bonus

The Last Best West is Wilfrid’s leader bonus that enables players to add farms to tundra tiles. Farms and camps on tundra generate +2 food, and lumber mills and mines on those tiles generate +2 production. This leader bonus also makes it 50% cheaper to purchase tundra tiles with gold.

Canada’s Unique Civ Ability

Four Faces of Peace is the unique civilization ability for this Civ 6 Canada leader. That civ ability prevents other civilizations from declaring surprise wars on Canada. However, it also prevents Canada from declaring surprise wars on city-states.

The best thing about the Four Faces of Peace civ ability is that it generates diplomatic favor for Canada from tourism. You’ll receive +1 diplomatic favor per 100 tourism generated when playing as this Civ 6 Canada leader. For example, 500 tourism will give you +5 diplomatic favor per turn. You’ll also receive 100% more diplomatic favor than usual for completing competitions and emergencies.

Canada’s Unique Infrastructure and Units

The Ice Hockey Rink is a unique infrastructure for Canada that you can add to tundra and snow tiles. Ice Hockey Rinks generate + 1 culture for each adjacent tundra and snow tile. They can generate an additional +4 culture when beside Stadiums. Ice Hockey Rinks also generate tourism equal to the culture yields with Flight research.

The Mountie is Canada’s unique unit. This light cavalry has a standard melee attack of 62 and a movement range of five tiles per turn. A +10 combat strength bonus increases Mountie’s melee attack when fighting within two tiles of a Canadian national park. It also has two builder charges with which you can establish a couple of national parks.

Strategy Tips for Playing as the Wilfrid Laurier Civ 6 Canada Leader

Diplomacy and tourism go hand-in-hand for Wilfred Laurier because of Canada’s Four Faces of Peace civ ability. Canada’s Ice Hockey Rinks and Mounties are also good for boosting culture and tourism. Thus, it’s best to strive for diplomatic or cultural victories when playing with this Civ 6 Canada leader.

To start with, try to establish more cities on and around tundra tiles when playing as the Wilfred Laurier Civ 6 Canada leader. His Last Best West leader bonus makes the tundra terrain much more appealing for settling. You can also add more Ice Hockey Rinks (restricted to one per city) to tiles by founding more settlements around tundra terrain. Add as many Ice Hockey Rinks as you can to generate more culture and tourism.

Where there’s tundra and some snow, there will usually be mountains. To further enhance Canada’s winter tourism appeal, unlock the Professional Sports civic for ski resorts. Then, add ski resorts to all the mountains you can to attract even more visitors.

To further boost your tourism, recruit some Mounties. A couple of Mounties will enable you to establish four national parks, which can be good tourism magnets. Your Mounties will also come in handy for beating off barbarians, even if you don’t go to war with another civilization.

Building the Eiffel Tower wonder will enable you to establish more national parks when playing as the Wilfrid Laurier Civ 6 Canada leader. The Eiffel Tower increases the appeal of all tiles within your civilization’s border by +2. So, that’s a wonder worth building to exploit Canada’s Mounties and national park proficiency.

When you’ve established a big tourism industry, you’ll reap the benefits from the additional diplomatic favor it will generate with Canada’s Four Faces of Peace ability. The greater diplomatic favor generated from tourism will make diplomacy a good secondary victory condition to play for. To enhance your chances of securing that victory condition, build the Statue of Liberty that will give you +4 diplomatic points. That wonder will also generate tourism for a cultural victory, like any other.

Selecting the Diplomatic Capital card is also a good way to gain even more diplomatic favor when playing for a diplomatic triumph with Canada. That card generates +4 diplomatic favor when selected as policy. It’s one of the best policies you can select for winning a Diplomatic Victory.

With his unique infrastructure, units, and civ ability, the Wilfrid Laurier Civ 6 Canada leader offers a strong tourism and diplomatic synergy with which to win games. Plus, his Last Best West leader bonus makes him one of the best for winter terrain. So, you can turn your civilization into a winter wonderland when playing as Wilfrid.
