Solid Snake and Lady Dimitrescu voice actors break down what fans get wrong about their characters

To the uninitiated, Solid Snake—the main protagonist of the Metal Gear Solid video game series—might come across as a stereotypical tough-talking, gruff-looking super-soldier: a hardened killing machine who infiltrates the most dangerous missions with stealth and skill, emerging unscathed every time. Similarly, Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil Village is often reduced to a meme-worthy caricature: the towering, seductive female with a striking appearance.

But, as is often the case with iconic characters (or, in the case of villains like Homelander from The Boys), it’s easy for the wrong traits to be idolized—while the deeper, more meaningful aspects of the character are overlooked.

Solid Snake’s voice actor, David Hayter, echoes this sentiment, noting that while Snake may look like a super-soldier—and is, in fact, a clone of Big Boss, the most legendary super-soldier within Metal Gear Solid lore—he possesses deeply human vulnerabilities and an unexpectedly big heart.

“People focus on the fact that he’s a tough guy and that he’s a professional killer [but] what really draws me to him and I think what subconsciously draws the audience to him is his inability to turn away from anybody who needs help… I think that’s really the key that makes him quite loveable,” Hayter explained in an interview from the Future Games Show, alongside fellow video game voice actor Maggie Robertson of Lady Dimetrescu from Resident Evil fame.

Hayter then playfully asked Robertson what people tend to misunderstand about her character, humorously reducing the popular Resident Evil villain to a “tall, large-boobed vampire” — a tongue-in-cheek nod to how Lady Dimitrescu is often stereotyped based on appearance alone. Robertson responded in kind, explaining that Dimitrescu is, above all, a mother — a defining trait that informs many of her actions toward the game’s protagonists. Like Snake, she added, the character has “a deceptive amount of heart.”

In the end, it’s clear that iconic video game characters like Solid Snake and Lady Dimitrescu are far more than the exaggerated personas they’re often reduced to online.
