Atari is mostly famous for being the company that revolutionized the video gaming industry in the late 1970s, only to completely mess it up in 1983. The video game crash of 1983 was a disaster for Atari, but the company has somehow managed to survive numerous other debacles since then. Today, Atari SA focuses primarily on retro gaming. A recent September post on Atari’s X page has confirmed an October 2025 launch month for its new Gamestation Go retro gaming console.
Atari showed its new portable Gamestation console, developed in partnership with My Arcade, at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. The Gamestation is a handheld console with a 7-inch high-resolution display that enhances the visual quality of the retro games available for it. Players can select to play more than 200 retro games, originally released for Atari 2600, 5200, and 7800 consoles, on the Gamestation.
The Gamestation includes a variety of control options for its games. Players can play their games with a D-pad, trackball, joysticks, four gamepad buttons, and a number pad. Its number pad is certainly a more standout feature, more specifically for playing Atari 5200 games. The trackball is ideal for playing the classic Millipede game originally launched on the Atari 2600.
Atari has taken a leaf out of Nintendo’s book by adding TV compatibility to its Gamestation console. The Gamestation has an HDMI port for connecting it to TVs, enabling you to play its games on a television. Thus, the Gamestation is like a Switch for retro Atari games in that respect.
The Gamestation also has additional secondary controllers for TV play. The Arcade Stick is a tabletop joystick that incorporates the controls from the handheld. Or you can utilize the Gamestation Gamepad, a rechargeable, wireless controller for the console.
New videos have appeared on the Atari X social media page and YouTube in September that confirm a October 2025 launch month for the Gamestation Go. A 26-second video on the Atari X page shows the Gamestation console and says, “Available in October.” A longer “Introducing the Atari Gamestation Go” video went up on YouTube in September that shows some of the console’s games and features.
The Gamestation Go is now available for pre-order on the Atari website. That new Atari console is retailing at $179.99. This Atari page provides a list of specifications and games for the Gamestation and includes a Pre-Order option.
So, the Gamestation will offer players a blast from the Atari past of video gaming when it launches in October 2025. It’s the latest in a line of retro-oriented Atari consoles released from 2021 to 2024, following on from the VCS, 2600+, and 7800+. Atari seemingly accepts it cannot compete with Nintendo in the console industry like it did in the 1980s, and the Gamestation reflects a continuation of its retro-focused strategy. If the Gamestation makes an impact, it could spark some renewed Atari interest among a new generation of players.
