How to Increase Civ 6 Appeal Ratings for Tiles in Civilization 6

Civilization 6 is a game based on hex tiles, each of which has appeal ratings. The Civ 6 appeal ratings for tiles are values that highlight their natural beauty. Tiles with the higher appeal values are more attractive to your citizens. Civilizations that include more tiles with higher appeal ratings can attract more visitors to secure cultural victories. There are various ways you can increase appeal ratings for Civilization 6 tiles that we’ll look at in more detail here.

Why do Tile Appeal Ratings Matter in Civilization 6?

The Civ 6 appeal ratings for tiles range from -4 or less to +4 or higher. There are five levels of appeal for tiles, which can affect the tourist value of certain tile improvements affected by them. These are the five tile appeal rating categories:

  • Breathtaking: +4
  • Charming: +2 to +3
  • Average: +1 to -1
  • Uninviting: -3 to -2
  • Disgusting: -4 or less

Civ 6 appeal ratings matter because they directly affect the tourism that National Parks, Seaside Resorts, Ski Resorts, and Chemamull tile improvements generate. Chemamull is a unique infrastructure for the Mapuche civilization. However, players can add National Parks, Seaside Resorts, and Ski Resorts to tiles with all the civilizations in Gathering Storm.

Tile appeal is most important to National Parks and Seaside Resorts. Players can only add National Parks and Seaside Resorts to tiles with charming or breathtaking Civ 6 appeal ratings. National Parks can generate a significant amount of tourism based on the total Civ 6 appeal value of all four tiles included within them. Seaside Resorts also generate gold and tourism based on their tile appeal ratings. Thus, National Parks and Seaside Resorts attract more visitors when you increase the Civ 6 appeal ratings of their tiles.

Neighborhood districts also provide housing based on the appeal ratings of the tiles you place them on. A Neighborhood placed on a tile with a breathtaking appeal provides a maximum of six housing units. Adding a Neighborhood to a tile in the lowest appeal rating category will only provide +2 housing. So, increasing Civ 6 appeal ratings for tiles can also boost your Neighborhood districts.

You can view the appeal ratings for all tiles within your civilization by selecting the map filter for it. Click the magnifying glass button above the map and select Appeal. Then, you’ll see the breathtaking, charming, average, uninviting, and disgusting tiles within civilization highlighted with different colors. Increasing the Civ 6 appeal ratings of average tiles might enable you to add more Seaside Resorts and National Parks to your civilization.

Plant More Forests

Forests (or woods) have a +1 appeal adjacency bonus for all tiles beside them. So, you can increase the appeal value of a tile by planting one or more forests beside it. For example, planting two forests beside a Seaside Resort will increase the Civ 6 appeal for its tile by +2. A +2 appeal rating increase for a Seaside Resort will increase the gold and tourism it generates by an equivalent amount. Note that you need to unlock the Conservation Civic to plant forests with Builder units in Civilization 6.

Clear Rainforest and Marshes

Rainforests and marsh tiles have a negative -1 appeal adjacency effect on tiles beside them. Therefore, removing rainforests and marshes with Builder units will increase the appeal ratings for each adjacent tile by +1. You can clear jungles and marshes with Builders after researching the Bronze Working and Engineering technologies.

Build Theater, Holy Site, Entertainment, and Water Park Districts

Holy Sites, Theater, Entertainment, and Water Parks are districts that have positive +1 Civ 6 appeal rating effects on tiles beside them. For example, building a Theater Square will increase the appeal of each of the tiles next to it by +1. So, building those districts alongside Seaside Resorts, Ski Resorts, and National Parks can be a good way to boost the tourism generated.

Build the Eiffel Tower (and Other Wonders)

All wonders generate a +1 Civ 6 appeal rating for tiles that surround them. However, the Eiffel Tower has an effect that increases the appeal value of all the tiles in your civilization by +2. So, the Eiffel Tower is a must-have wonder for all players aiming for cultural victories because it increases the tourism value of National Parks, Seaside Resorts, and Ski Resorts within your civilization when built.

Activate Alvar Aalto and Charles Correa

Alvar Aalto and Charles Correa are two great engineers with whom you can increase Civ 6 appeal ratings for tiles. Activating Charles Correa will increase the appeal of a city’s tiles by +2. The Alvar Aalto great engineer, increases the appeal of a city’s tiles by +1 when activated within it. So, activate those great persons in cities that include National Parks, Seaside Resorts, Ski Resorts, or Housing districts to better exploit their tile appeal effects.

Remove Tile Improvements With Negative Appeal Effects

Numerous tile improvements have negative appeal effects for surrounding tiles. Mine, Quarry, and Oil Rig improvements reduce the appeal rating for tiles beside them by -1. Thus, removing the Mine and Quarry improvements added to tiles is another way to increase tile appeal. Alternatively, don’t add them to hexes in the first place if you want to preserve the value of adjacent tiles for National Parks and Seaside Resorts.

Add Tile Improvements With Positive Appeal Effects

Some civilizations have unique infrastructure tile improvements with positive Civ 6 appeal effects. For example, adding Egypt’s Sphinx to a hex increases the appeal of tiles around it by +1. These unique tile improvements also have a +1 appeal effect for adjacent tiles:

  • Château (France)
  • Golf Course (Scotland)
  • Nazca Line (Nazca city-state suzerain)
  • Rock-Hewn Church (Ethiopia)

So, those are the ways you can increase Civ 6 appeal ratings for tiles. Players pursuing cultural victories should certainly pay closer attention to the appeal values of tiles within their civilizations. Increasing the appeal ratings for tiles, as outlined above, will enable you to add more National Parks, Seaside Resorts, and Ski Resorts within your civilization and raise their tourist value. Seaside Resorts can also give your civilization a good gold boost when you increase their tile appeal ratings.
