BTs (Beached Things) are the rather creepy lost souls Sam has to deal with throughout Death Stranding. They’re like spooky ghosts that usually start appearing when it starts raining. These suckers will grab and drag you when they get the chance, which can inflict considerable damage on your cargo. So, the BTs are a rather annoying obstacle you’ve got to get to grips with when playing Death Stranding. Here are some tips for dealing with the Death Stranding BTs.
Check the Timefall Forecasts to Avoid BTs
Timefall is the supernatural, hazardous rain in which BTs usually appear. It’s hard to avoid timefall during the early game, but unlocking the timefall forecast in Episode 3 does help. Checking the timefall forecasts is one of the best ways to avoid BTs entirely. Look at those forecasts before setting out on your deliveries to plan your routes around timefall whenever possible. Avoiding timefall and BTs makes longer routes around them more preferable.

Crouch When Walking Around BTs
Sound is what BTs hunt by. Therefore, it is best to remain quiet when BTs are present. To reduce your movement noises, crouch when walking. Crouching is the slowest and quietest way to move in Death Stranding, which will give you a better chance of walking around nearby BTs.

Hold Your Breath When BTs Are Very Close
You’ll know when BTs are very close when your Odradek starts spinning rapidly. You’re very, very close to a BT when you start to see their footsteps appearing. When you see footsteps, hold your breath and keep still to remain as quiet as possible. Then, the BT might walk away without detecting you during your breathless period.
Chuck Hematic Grenades at the Them
Hemantic Grenades are ranged weapons that eliminate Death Stranding BTs when you chuck them at the things. When you’ve unlocked them, I strongly recommend equipping some Hematic Grenades because they’re among the best weapons to combat them with. You can unlock Hematic Grenade Lv2 by reaching level two at the Paleontologist prepper station. Then, you should always pack a few of those grenades for countering BTs that get in your way.

Utilize Bola Guns Against BTs
The Bola Gun is a weapon that fires electrically charged wires at enemies. Although primarily designed for entangling Mules, the Bola Gun can also disrupt BTs much the same. Firing the Bola Gun ties up BTs, enabling players to sneak past them when required. So, the Bola Gun is also worth fabricating and equipping for dealing with Death Stranding BTs.
Check Out the BT Firing Drills
Firing range drills become available from about episode 3. The BT firing range drills are ideal for practising combat against the Beached Things in Death Stranding. You can practise utilizing Hematic Grenades, Maser, and Bola Guns against BTs in those simulations. So, set aside more practise time for dealing with the Death Stranding BTs to enhance your combat proficiency against them.

Let BTs Grab You if You’re Not Carrying Much Cargo
If you’re not carrying any precious cargo, then you don’t necessarily have that much to lose by letting the Death Stranding BTs grab you. When they grab you, they’ll drag you, and a BT boss will appear, which is usually easy to avoid fighting by running away from it. So, it’s often easier to give yourself up to the BTs and then go out to the boss. When you’ve outrun the boss, the timefall storm will completely clear, enabling you to move around the area freely without any more BT hassle.
However, this tactic can also be effective even when carrying a lot of cargo. When you’re carrying cargo, offload everything you need to deliver so the Death Stranding BTs can’t damage it. Place a marker on the map to highlight where you placed the cargo and give yourself up to the BTs. Outrun the BT boss and then return to where you placed your cargo to pick it all up again.

Equip Power Skeletons to Shake Off BTs
Power Skeletons can help you shake off BT when they try to grab you. The extra strength and balance that Power Skeletons provide will give you a better chance of shaking off the BTs grab attempts. So, try fabricating and equipping Power Skeleton level 3 when you can. You can obtain the blueprint for that gear by increasing the connection level at the Engineer prepper to level 4.

Keep an Eye Out for Timefall Shelters
Timefall Shelters are structures that protect you from the BT timefall rain. These structures provide built-in container repair spray, canteen refill, and timefall storm acceleration. So, check your map to see if there are any Timefall Shelters near when you’re in BT areas.
I also recommend equipping PPCs so that you can construct Timefall Shelters when necessary. Then, you’ll be less dependent on finding available Timefall Shelders. Building Timefall Shelters will provide you with more regular cargo container protection from the rain.

So, don’t let the BTs get on top of you in Death Stranding. You’ll likely deal with the Death Stranding BTs somewhat better by following the tips above. Make sure you’re well-equipped to deal with them, walk slowly when they’re around, and try to circumvent the BT timefall whenever possible.
