A Guide to Playing as the Macedonian Alexander Civ 6 Leader in Civilization 6

Alexander III was the king of Macedon in ancient times, who defeated the Achaemenid Empire, widely considered one of the greatest generals in history. He is one of the leaders from the Persia and Macedon pack you can select to play as in Civilization 6. The Alexander Civ 6 leader is one who is well-equipped for war, conquest, and scientific discovery in Civilization 6.

Alexander’s World’s End Leader Bonus

To the World’s End is the leader bonus for Alexander of Macedon in Civilization 6. This leader bonus makes Macedonian cities immune to war weariness. It also fully heals all your military units when you capture a city with a wonder of the world in it.

The Macedonian Hellenistic Fusion Civ Ability

The Hellenistic Fusion civ ability for the Macedon civilization grants you a free Eureka for each Campus and Encampment district within a city you conquer. It also gives you free Inspirations for each of the Theater Square and Holy Site cities you conquer. For example, capturing a city that includes a Theater Square and Campus district will grant you a free tech Eureka and civic Inspiration.

The Macedonian Unique Units and Infrastructure

Macedon has two unique units. The Hypaspist is an early-game unique unit for Macedon that replaces the Swordsman. That unit has a 38 melee attack rating. Besieging districts gives the Hypaspist a +5 combat strength bonus.

The Hetairoi is a unique Macedonian heavy cavalry replacement for the Horsement unit with a melee attack rating of 36. This unit receives a +5 combat strength bonus when it attacks adjacent to a Great General. It also has a one free promotion when recruited.

The Basilikoi Paides is Macedon’s unique Encampment building that replaces Barracks. That building gives combat units (melee, anti-cavalry, ranged, and siege) trained in a city that includes it a 25% combat experience bonus. Basilikoi Paides gives you a science boost amounting to 25% of the production cost for combat units trained in cities that include it. In Gathering Storm, Basilikoi Paides also increases strategic resource stockpiles by +10.

Tips for Playing as the Alexander Civ 6 Leader

The intro video for the Alexander Civ 6 leader says, “Turn away from peace, for there is no way to establish your legacy but from conquering vast lands.” Thus, his intro drops a strong hint that the Domination Victory condition is the best one go for when playing as Alexander of Macedon. Alexander is indeed great for waging war because the Hellenistic Fusion civ ability will enable you unlock civics and technologies faster by capturing more and more cities. Nor does war weariness have any effect on Macedon, thanks to the World’s End leader bonus.

As Macedon is primarily a land-based civilization that thrives on war and conquest, it’s best to play on a map with large land masses. Select to play on maps like Pangaea or Continents (perhaps Small Continents as well) when you start a game to play as the Alexander Civ 6 leader. Continental maps like those are ideal for land-based domination campaigns.

Both of Macedon’s unique units are Classical Era units for the early game. So, an early game war is something you should engage in to fully exploit those units when playing for the Domination Victory condition. Research the Horseback Riding and Iron Working technologies ASAP so that you can roll out some of those units for a victorious early game war to get you started for a Domination Victory. Try to establish new cities near the Iron and Horse strategic resources required for those units.

Build plenty of Encampment Districts and Basilikoi Paides buildings when playing for a Domination Victory with the Alexander Civ 6 leader. Try to recruit most of your units from cities that include Basilikoi Paides to exploit the 25% combat experience bonus it gives them. To further boost your units’ combat experience, select the After Action Report policy card. After Action Report gives all your units 25% combat experience when selected, which amounts to 50% when combined with Basilikoi Paides.

If you’re not inclined to go for the Domination Victory, winning a space race is the best alternative for the Alexander Civ 6 leader. Try to fight a few winnable wars when doing so to give your science research a boost with Eurekas. Focus on capturing cities that include Campus or Encampment districts to exploit the Hellenistic Fusion civ ability for more scientific Eurekas.

Then, you can also further boost your scientific research by rolling out more units from cities that include the Basilikoi Paides building. Even if you don’t need the units that much for wars, you can still utilize them for wiping out barbarian encampments. Wiping out barbarian encampments paves the way for more peaceful civilization expansion, but you’ll still need an army to do so.

I also recommend building Encampments and Military Academies cities that include Spaceport districts when playing for scientific victory with the Alexander Civ 6 leader. Firstly, because Encampment buildings increase city production. Selecting the Integrated Space Cell policy card will also increase production for space race projects by 15% in cities that include Military Academies.

So, the Alexander Civ 6 leader is a good choice for players who prefer to go on the warpath in Civilization 6. His Hellenistic Fusion civ ability and World’s End leader bonus will enable you to unlock many technologies and civics somewhat faster by waging war without any war weariness setting in. Then, you can further boost combat XP and science output for crushing enemies by rolling out military units from cities with Basilikoi Paides buildings.
