8 Tips for the Late Game in Sid Meier’s Civilization 6

The late game in Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 is when games are won and lost. When you reach the late game stage in Civ 6 (the last 150 turns or so), you should be clear about what victory condition you’re aiming for. It is then that you have access to a much wider variety of technology and civics to more fully exploit for securing victory. Here are some hints and tips for the late-game period in Civilization 6.

Save Your Game Before Securing a Science or Domination Victory

Note that you don’t necessarily always have to play for only the victory condition in a Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 game. When you’re about to secure a domination or scientific victory in Civ 6, save the game just before you take the final capital city or complete the remaining space race project required. Then, you can always return to that save point to pursue a different score or cultural victory condition after winning a game, by cancelling production for the remaining space race project or not taking the remaining capital city.

Check the Environmental Details in Gathering Storm

Climate change is a feature in Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 Gathering Storm DLC that can have quite a big impact in the late game. Rising sea levels, caused by melting polar ice, can flood many tiles in your coastal cities. The flooding of tiles can destroy entire districts if you’re not careful.

To avoid getting into a flooding mess in Gathering Storm, check when sea levels will rise on the World Climate screen. Then, build Flood Barriers in cities that will be more heavily affected by the rising sea. Doing that will minimise the damage inflicted on your cities by coastal flooding.

Keep an Eye on the Competition

Even when you are clearly ahead for a victory condition in Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 late game, that might not necessarily mean you’re sure to win. There might still be another civilization that’s closer to securing an alternative victory. So, click on the victory condition panel to see what the competition is up to.

If it looks like another civilization might secure an alternative victory condition first, then you’ll need to take action. The best way to take action is usually to go to war against another civilization that looks like it might beat you. However, you’ll also need to win that war by capturing many enemy cities, so build up and upgrade your military first if necessary.

Smash Your Enemies With Stealth Bombers

When it comes to winning wars in Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 late game, utilizing Stealth Bombers is the best way to do it. The Stealth Bomber is one of the strongest units for late-game domination, with which you can blitz enemy cities for your units to capture on the ground. Those bombers have exceptional range and serious damage output. So, make sure you build at least two or three Stealth Bombers that will enable you to dominate late-game wars.

Run District Projects

You will have access to district projects with which you can convert cities’ production into specific yields during the late game in Sid Meier’s Civilization 6. For example, Campus Research Grants generate additional science when ongoing and also great person points for scientists when completed. I recommend running the Carnival and Campus Research projects to boost culture and science for unlocking remaining tech and civics quicker in the late game. You can also boost great person points for attracting more great engineers, scientists, and cultural figures to your civilization by running such projects.

Select a Tier 4 Government When Their Negative Effects Don’t Matter

The Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 Gathering Storm DLC includes tier 4 governments for players to select in the late game. Those governments have two more policy card slots than tier 3 alternatives, plus some strong positive effects. However, they also have the following negative effects:

  • Synthetic Technology: -10% tourism
  • Digital Democracy: -3 combat strength
  • Corporate Libertarianism: -10% science

Tier 4 governments offer big advantages over tier 3 alternatives with their five wildcard slots, so long as their negative effects won’t affect the victory condition you’re aiming for. For example, selecting Digital Democracy if you’re not planning on going to war. If you’ve already researched all the technologies, select the Corporate Libertarianism government. The -10% tourism effect of Synthetic Technology won’t matter at all if you’re playing for a Domination Victory.

Add Many Seasteads and Offshore Wind Farms to Coastal Tiles

Seasteads and Offshore Wind Farms are great tile improvements for boosting city production during the late game in Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 Gathering Storm. Research the Predictive System and Seastead technologies to unlock those tile improvements. Then, you can add many Seasteads and Offshore Wind Farms to coast tiles to considerably increase production in coastal cities. This is an especially good way to increase space race project production for coastal cities with Spaceports.

Secure Domination Victories With Nukes

If you’re playing for a Domination Victory, make sure you research Nuclear Fission to complete the Manhattan Project ASAP. Build some nuclear devices and Stealth Bombers with which to deploy them. Then, you can capture remaining enemy capitals quickly and easily in the late game to secure your Domination Victory by nuking them!

The Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 late game is the time for you to secure your victories. Sticking to the tips above can help you secure variable victory conditions in the late game period. Fully exploiting the best technologies and civics available to you in the late game is the key to victory.
