Total War: Three Kingdoms is a game with a detailed China campaign that features real-time strategy battles. Although you can select to automatically resolve battles, it might sometimes be better to fight them yourself. Mastering Total War: Three Kingdoms battles will give you a better chance of winning campaigns. Here are some tips to help you win more Total War: Three Kingdoms battles.
Break Enemy Units With the Hammer and Anvil Tactic
The Hammer and Anvil tactic has remained a crucial one throughout the history of Total War, which can be just as devastating in Three Kingdoms. Its concept is simple: pin down enemy units with infantry (the anvil) and then attack the pinned divisions from behind with cavalry flanking (the hammer). Add some shock cavalry to your armies with which to execute this tactic. Then, group your shock cavalry units together and move them into battlefield positions from which they can attack pinned enemy divisions from behind or the side.
Remember the Total War Combat Triangle
The Total War: Three Kingdoms battles have a core combat triangle that’s important to remember. That combat triangle is: Spearmen beat cavalry, cavalry destroy ranged units, and archers are strong against unarmored infantry divisions (from a distance). So, order your units to attack those they’re best at countering.

Target Units That Are Low on Morale
Morale is a crucial to winning Total War: Three Kingdoms battles. If you can generally break the morale of the enemy army, you will probably win the battle. You can check the morale of enemy units by clicking on them. Focus on attacking enemy units with low morale, which are easier to knock out of battles. When an enemy unit routs, that will also reduce the morale of those divisions around it (on the same side), which can generate a chain rout domino effect.

Eliminate Standard Units With Vanguard Generals
Red Vanguard generals are those characters who excel at breaking enemy lines in combat against regular units in Total War: Three Kingdoms battles. They’re especially proficient for shock cavalry flanking (Hammer and Anvil) tactics. So, attack standard units, preferably by flanking, with Vanguard generals to inflict considerable damage on them.

Kill Off Enemy Generals With Champions and Sentinels
Champion and Sentinel generals are the best ones to attack enemy commanders with. Sentinels have high melee evasion and are good for locking down enemy commanders. However, green Champions are the best for killing enemy generals in direct frontline combat. So, try to eliminate enemy generals with Champions and Sentinels to devastate enemy morale.
Place Spear Units on the Left and Right Sides of Your Army Line
Spear divisions are the best for countering cavalry. A good way to deploy spear divisions is to place them on the left and right sides of your army line. Doing so will protect the sides of your army line from flanking maneuvers. If enemy cavalry tries to attack missile divisions, spearmen will also be better placed to intercept them on the sides of your army line.

Take to the High Ground
Try to exploit good high ground on a Total War: Three Kingdoms battlefield by placing some units on it. Placing archers and crossbow units on high ground will extend their ranges. Melee units also have an advantage from high ground because divisions charging uphill lose speed, tire more quickly, and fight less efficiently. So, placing a few missile units on high ground with spear or cavalry divisions protecting them can give you an edge in Total War: Three Kingdoms battles.
Place Commander Generals Just Behind Your Front Line
Commanders are generals who provide the best morale boosts for armies in Total War: Three Kingdoms battles. The best way to deploy Commanders is to place them just behind your front-line divisions in combat, where their passive morale aura boosts will have the most effect. Make sure your Commanders don’t get caught up in too much fighting, as it can keep them in battles and lower morale. Targeting enemy Commanders with Champions and Sentinels is also a good way to damage enemy morale during battles.

Concentrate Archery Fire on Single Units
Missile divisions will typically automatically fire on those divisions nearest to them within range. To inflict maximum damage with archery divisions, order all your missile units to attack single targets. Concentrating their missile fire in such a way will maximize damage output inflicted on a targeted division, which is the best way to break enemy units with archers. That’s especially the case when you target divisions with lower morale, which will rout more easily.

Fire arrows can also be somewhat more effective than standard ones. If you have a general with the Flaming Shot skill, select the flaming arrow option for your missile units. Such arrows increase damage inflicted and reduce enemy morale better, especially when firing at those around trees and structures.
You can defeat stronger armies in Total War: Three Kingdoms battles by using better battle tactics during campaigns. Flanking enemy units (with Hammer and Anvil), exploiting terrain, targeting low-morale units, utilizing generals according to their strengths, and remembering the TW combat triangle will enable you to defeat stronger armies and win more battles in Total War: Three Kingdoms. Good luck, and have fun annihilating enemy armies in Three Kingdoms!
