Following news that Electronic Arts will lay off 5% of its workforce, EA has cancelled Respawn’s Star Wars Mandalorian first-person shooter game, which was being overseen by former LucasArts veteran and Medal of Honor co-creator Peter Hirschmann. Hirschmann also worked on a number of Star Wars video games under EA, including Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and the original Battlefront games.
EA Entertainment president Laura Miele informed investors and the public in a statement from the company published on Wednesday that after much review that Respawn should redirect their focus entirely into the Star Wars Jedi and Apex Legends franchises, rather than the Star Wars Mandalorian first-person shooter game, which was still in early stages of development.
“Respawn’s unique ability to connect with players and create exceptional game experiences is unrivaled in entertainment,” Miele said in the statement. “As we’ve looked at Respawn’s portfolio over the last few months, what’s clear is the games our players are most excited about are Jedi and Respawn’s rich library of owned brands.
“Knowing this, we have decided to pivot away from early development on a Star Wars FPS Action game to focus our efforts on new projects based on our owned brands while providing support for existing games.
“It’s always hard to walk away from a project, and this decision is not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion they have for the game. Giving fans the next installments of the iconic franchises they want is the definition of blockbuster storytelling and the right place to focus.”
Sources indicated that Respawn’s Star Wars Mandalorian first-person shooter game would allow players to assume the role of Din Djarin, the infamous bounty hunter from the popular Disney+ series played by Pedro Pascal. Players would travel across the galaxy in search of various bounties and take part of “fast-paced” gameplay, one element of which would see players regenerating health based on successive kills.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
