Nintendo’s animated Super Mario Bros movie was a box-office smash, which grossed more than $1 billion. It is the highest-grossing movie based on a video game in history. Nintendo announced in September 2025 that it would release a sequel to that film, called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, directed by Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath. Now, Nintendo and Illumination have revealed the official trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in November 2025.
Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s boss Chris Meledandri revealed more about the upcoming Mario Galaxy movie in a Direct video. That Direct video includes the Super Mario Galaxy trailer. The trailer reveals Bowser Jr will be an antagonist in the upcoming movie, and Princess Rosalina from the Galaxy game will also be a character in the film.
Bowser features in the trailer, which shows the sequel will pick up from where the first movie left off, with Mario’s nemesis in a shrunken form. Bowser Jr confronts and attacks Mario and Luigi on a mission to rescue his father. The trailer clip also shows Princess Rosalina fighting a Megaleg, which is a mechanical boss from the Galaxy game.
Bowser Jr is a character from the Mario franchise who first appeared in Mario Sunshine. Since then, Bowser Jr has also featured in Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros. As the prince of Koopas, Bowser Jr is the heir to the throne.
Yoshi did not appear in the trailer. However, there is firm speculation that he will be a character in the Mario Galaxy movie. The clip does clearly show that Princess Peach and Toad will be returning characters as they shoot off into space towards a water planet.
Chris Meledandri and Jack Black (Bowser voice actor) announced the cast for the new characters in the Direct video. Brie Larson, a Nintendo mega-fan and Captain Marvel star, voices Princess Rosalina. Benny Safdie will voice Bowser Jr, Chris Pratt will return as Mario, along with much of the cast from the original Super Mario Bros movie.

Nintendo and Illumination are still keeping major story details for the Mario Galaxy movie under wraps. However, what is clear is that the upcoming movie will not be a direct adaptation of the Galaxy game story. Meledandri has said that Galaxy games are the core inspiration for the film rather than a storyline-based one.
Mario Galaxy is one of two upcoming Nintendo movies. The other being the Legend of Zelda live-action film. Nintendo’s latest financial briefing has also confirmed the big N intends to establish a consistent release cadence for video game movies. That financial briefing says, “We are continuing to prepare for the ongoing release of movies in the future.” Of course, the box-office performance of the upcoming Nintendo movies will no doubt be an important factor for future film releases from the big N.
Nintendo has already made a big splash in the movie business with the Super Mario Bros animated film. If the Mario Galaxy movie is a comparable hit, we will probably at least see more CGI films for Nintendo games. The next Mario movie is scheduled for an April 3, 2025, cinema release in the United States.
