If you were playing mobile games around 2013, you remember the golden age of the endless runner. It was the era dominated by titans like Temple Run and Subway Surfers. But right alongside them, racking up over 20 million downloads, was a quirky, spooky contender: Zombie Run HD.
The Kyiv-based studio, RetroStyle Games, is returning to its roots. They have developed a proprietary engine specifically to modernize the classic runner that originally competed with the above-mentioned Temple Run and Subway Surfers.
After a long absence from the Google Play Store, RetroStyle Games has announced it is bringing the franchise back from the dead on this page. The announcement on that page says: “One of our oldest games just got a new life – say hello to the remastered Zombie Run… Our team improved the models, updated the visual effects, refined the animations, and reorganized the UI.”
But according to the team, this isn’t just a quick port to cash in on nostalgia. It’s a statement that legendary mobile IPs deserve a second life, and that the runner genre is still capable of capturing hundreds of thousands of users daily if treated with respect.
The Engine of Resurrection
RetroStyle Games holds a unique position in the industry today. While they develop their own hits, they are perhaps best known as a premier art outsourcing studio, providing high-end 2D and 3D assets for some of the biggest gaming companies in the world.
But Zombie Run was the game that started it all for them. To honor that legacy, the team decided against simply patching decade-old code.

Instead, RetroStyle Games revealed they have spent significant time building a completely custom runner framework and engine from scratch. This new technology was designed specifically for the Zombie Run refresh, ensuring that while the nostalgic gameplay loop remains, the performance, physics, and visual fidelity are up to modern 2025 standards.
More Than Just Running
The original game stood out for its “brainless controls” and unique atmosphere – a spooky yet vibrant world filled with character. The refresh aims to double down on this.
The new engine allows for a smoother, faster experience as players navigate tricky environments, from cursed hills to ancient temples. The team is also emphasizing a rich setting and a massive roster of diverse, unlockable zombie characters, leaning into the studio’s current strengths in character art and design.

Applying Modern Success to Classic Gameplay
RetroStyle Games isn’t just relying on old glory. Since the original 2013 release, the studio has proven they know how to build massive, modern F2P successes, most notably the huge survival hit, Last Pirate.
They are now applying the lessons learned from managing large-scale, modern projects back into the game that launched their company. The goal is to prove that a classic runner, powered by bespoke technology and modern design sensibilities, can still dominate the charts.
The revamped Zombie Run HD game is now available for Android and iOS mobile devices. You can download it from this Google Play page. It’s time to start running again!
