Sony put out a support article on Friday detailing the process through which Playstation 4 owners can upgrade certain PS4 games to the PS5 by both physical and digital means. Depending on the games that are being upgraded from the PS4 to the PS5, there might be no additional cost, limited time offers or a requirement to purchase the upgrade.
How to upgrade disc PS4 games to the PS5 console with a disc drive
The support article first details how to upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc on a PS5 console with a disc drive.
First, you’ll need a PS5 console with a disc drive. Next you’ll need to sign on your existing PS5 account (Sony recently unified all Sony Group services into one account, making this part of the process even easier), insert the eligible PS4 game, go to the game hub for the game, then select the upgrade offer on the game hub and review the upgrade offer.
Next, select download (or purchase with the discount price) to download/purchase content. After the download is complete, you’ll be able to play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS4 game disc. You will need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game.
How to upgrade digital PS4 games to the PS5 console with a disc drive or PS5 Digital Edition
To upgrade an eligible digital PS4 game you already own to the digital PS5 version, you’ll first have to sign into your existing account on the PS5 console.
Next, find the applicable PS5 game in the Playstation Store and go to the game hub for the selected PS5 game. Select the upgrade offer on the game hub and review the upgrade offer.
Then select download (or purchase with the discount price) to download/purchase the applicable content. When the download is complete, you’ll be able to play the PS5 game.
There will be ten games that won’t be eligible when it comes to the leap from PS4 to PS5: Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One, DWVR, TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2, Just Deal With It!, Shadow Complex Remastered, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, Shadwen and Joe’s Diner. Our condolences to the owners of those particular titles. (Especially those of you who actually purchased Afro Samurai 2.)
What do you think of the process through which you upgrade PS4 games to the PS5? Sound off in the comments.
Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
