7 of the Greatest PC Games That Deserve Sequels

Although there are many extended game franchises for Windows PC, there have still been numerous one-hit wonder PC games throughout history. Developers have released some great games for PCs, but then never bothered to follow them with sequels. A hit game doesn’t necessarily guarantee a sequel in a gaming industry with studio closures, intellectual property tangles, and rights-holder agreements. These are some of the greatest PC games that deserve sequels.

Minecraft

First, let us begin with Minecraft, which is perhaps the biggest gaming phenomenon in history, alongside the likes of Tetris and Mario. Minecraft is among the greatest PC games because of its boundless creativity, diverse gameplay modes, and massive community and modding. It’s the ultimate game for building custom mini-games to share with other players.

So, some players might insist there should be a Minecraft 2, especially as its foundational Java engine is getting a tad dated. A Minecraft 2 could provide a mechanical revolution with a new physics engine, advanced shaders, enhanced entity animations, and altogether more alive worlds. However, a sequel probably won’t happen any time soon, as it seems Mojang prefers to focus on regular content updates for the original sandbox game.

Elden Ring

With a Metacritic score of 94, Elden Ring is among the most highly rated PC games without a sequel. This is one of the greatest PC games because of its revolutionary open-world, precise combat, and deep RPG build variety customization. It is truly a game that players can get lost in with its immersive world design. So, there’s no doubting Elden Ring deserves a sequel, but releasing a second game that betters or at least matches the original would be a tough task.

Grim Fandango

For many, Grim Fandango remains the best point-and-click adventure game in history. This was a great LucasArts adventure game because of its unique Art Deco style, immersive narrative, iconic jazzy soundtrack, and memorable characters. The game presented an intriguing mix of jazz-infused noir, Aztec mythology, and Mexican Día de los Muertos tradition.

So, Grim Fandango deserves a sequel, but probably won’t ever have one because the game didn’t have much commercial impact. The point-and-click adventure is more of a niche indie game genre these days. Furthermore, Grim Fandango’s LucasArts developer no longer exists to release a sequel. However, you can still play a remastered version of Grim Fandango that’s available on Steam.

Sektori

Sektori is an intense twin stick shooter in which players blast their way through procedurally generated battlefields with space ships. Players have fallen in love with Sektori because of its refined arcade shooter gameplay, intense particle effects, high-energy techno soundtrack, and dynamic procedurally generated levels. It’s a fun and addictive game that offers a modern throwback to classic old-school arcade shooters like Robotron: 2084.

As Kimmo released Sektori last year, it’s still a relatively new game for which a sequel is a distinct possibility. A Sektori 2 could have deeper ship customization, more adaptive AI enemies, expanded dynamic arenas, and deep-space exploration between combat zones. Sektori already has a devoted cult following, but it would probably be too soon to release a sequel for it in 2026 or 2027.

Rise of Nations

Rise of Nations is a classic real-time strategy game that effectively merged the Civilization tech-tree and city-building with the tactical combat of Age of Empires. Unlike many RTS games that typically focus on specific eras, Rise of Nations multiplayer matches expanded across all of history. This is among the greatest PC games that deserve a sequel because of its unique hybrid design, strategic depth, and high replay value of its single-player and multiplayer modes.

Big Huge Games even had a proposed Rise of Nations 2 on the cards (a plan to expand RoN into a series), but this sequel never happened after Microsoft cancelled its deal with BHG. The Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends spinoff did not have the impact Microsoft had hoped for. Thus, it seems unlikely we will see a full Rise of Nations sequel, but you can still play a remastered Rise of Nations Extended Edition of the game.

Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri

Alpha Centauri was the spiritual successor to the Civilization game series that took empire-building into outer space on the planet of Chiron. This Civilization spin-off title is one of the most highly rated turn-based strategy games in history, with a Metacritic score of 92. Alpha Centauri was a great PC title because of its deep lore and philosophical narrative, advanced gameplay mechanics, unit design customization, and dynamic world ecology.

So, it’s a pity there’s never been an official Alpha Centauri 2, mainly because of the EA Firaxis split that emerged. The game’s Firaxis developer cannot release a Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri 2 while EA still owns its IP rights. If a sequel did ever happen, though, it could be a significant graphical enhancement with expanded factions, more responsive planet, modernized UI, and enhanced workshop for more detailed unit designs.

Age of Methology

Age of Mythology remains a classic RTS game that enables players to play god. It was a game that mixed Age of Empires with magic, heroes, and mythological creatures. Age of Mythology is another of the greatest PC games without a sequel because of its unique mythological gameplay, engaging solo campaign, and distinct asymmetrical civilizations.

The Age of Methology: Retold game remake revived the original AoM in 2024. Even though the remake introduces significant upgrades and new content, it’s not a true sequel. So, why not bring out a true AoM sequel with new pantheons, additional game modes, god-specific campaigns, and a modern graphics engine for higher-fidelity visuals? If the Retold remake has enough impact, then an Age of Methology 2 is feasible.

So, where’s the part two for those terrific PC games? There are certainly seven of the greatest PC games that deserve sequels. However, sequels are certainly off the cards for games like Alpha Centauri, Rise of Nations, and Grim Fandango. Sequels for Elden Ring, Minecraft, and Age of Methology have been speculated, but it seems the developers are more committed to releasing content expansions for those titles.
