The Super Mario Galaxy movie is all set for launch in April 2026. The sequel to the smash hit Super Mario Bros animated film, which grossed more than 1.36 billion at the box office, is one of the most hotly anticipated movies of the year. Nintendo has shown us glimpses of Super Mario Galaxy twice before. Now the big N has also revealed the final, official Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer for the upcoming film.
Nintendo showed off the final trailer for Super Mario Galaxy during its March Nintendo Direct video. That video included appearances from much of the film’s primary cast. The Mario and Luigi voice actors, Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, introduced the final Mario Galaxy movie trailer to view before the film’s April release.
The first thing that the trailer shows us is Bowser Jr rescuing the shrunken Bowser from Mario and Luigi. He demands that Mario release his father. When Mario refuses, Bowser Jr leaps into the air to unleash some kind of explosive weapon that blasts Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi into the air. A large Koopa spaceship raises Princess Peach’s castle into the air and crashes it to the ground with Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi fleeing from the debris.
The next scene in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer shows a revived, full-size Bowser returning to his Koopa Troopers. Bowser proclaims, “My Koopas, your king has returned.” So, it seems Bowser is back in business after his son rescues him in the Mario Galaxy movie.
Another scene shows the Toads in despair, presumably because of Bowser’s rescue or perhaps something else. Mario says, “Everybody, just calm down.” Then, the trailer shows Mario, Yoshi, and Luigi flying through space as they did in the Galaxy 2 game.
The Wart character also appears within the Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer. Wart was the final boss from Super Mario World 2 on the NES. Thus, the trailer shows us that some Mario series characters from beyond the Galaxy game will be in the movie.
Aside from the new Super Mario Galaxy movie trailer footage, the Nintendo Direct video revealed more details for the film. Chris Pratt revealed Mario and Luigi fight side-by-side for the film’s duration. Illumination chief Chris Meledandri revealed Luiz Guzman, Issa Rae, and Donald Glover to be voice actors for Wart, Honey Queen, and Yoshi.
Now all that remains to be seen is whether the Super Mario Galaxy animated movie will be good, or at least better than the first one. The original Super Mario Bros animated movie had very mixed media reviews with an average Metacritic Metascore of 43. However, the general audience reception to the first film was much more positive, with an average user (viewer) Metacritic rating of 83.
Thus, the Super Mario Bros animated bros movie was a divisive one that its sequel can feasibly improve on. Nevertheless, it was still a huge box office hit for Nintendo. Without the animated novelty of the first film, surpassing its box office impact will be a tall order for the Super Mario Galaxy movie.
What the Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer generally shows is that a good variety of Mario characters will be featured in the film, along with some wonderful worlds from the game. The Super Mario Bros film did at least have stunning animation, and it looks like its sequel will have equally strong CGI visuals. You can watch the Super Mario Galaxy movie in cinemas from April 1 2026.
