Suicide Squad game from Batman: Arkham developer Rocksteady in the works

“So that’s it huh…we’re the patsies…we’re some kind of suicide squad.”

Batman: Arkham series developer Rocksteady announced that they’re currently developing a Suicide Squad game, with a more detailed disclosure to be made in two weeks on August 22nd. Rocksteady made the announcement via their Twitter account, with a stylized Suicide Squad logo forming a crosshairs on the back of Superman’s head.

Does the teaser image suggest that players will be tasked with the seemingly insurmountable task of taking out the Man of Steel himself or perhaps the Justice League? While details are scarce thus far, the possibilities for a Suicide Squad in the vein of the Batman: Arkham series are certainly intriguing. Staple characters such as Harley Quinn and Deadshot are clear shoo-ins to be included as playable super-villains in the game’s roster but what about intermittent members such as Deathstroke or Reverse Flash? Will players be tasked with procuring Kryptonite to take out Superman? Or forced to storm Wayne Manor to battle Batman? Will the game institute a similar mix of puzzle solving and intense brawling which made the Batman: Arkham series such an achievement or will it be more of a mission-oriented game focusing more on utilizing the various Suicide Squad’s members’ skillsets to achieve success?

Whatever the case, Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad game should coincide with the release of the sequel/reboot to the 2016 Suicide Squad film, The Suicide Squad, which is slated for an August 2021 release. Although the first Suicide Squad film, directed by David Ayer, was met with a lukewarm reception by critics and fans alike, The Suicide Squad, with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn at the helm has the potential to fulfill and exceed the expectations of the first.

The official announcement for Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad game will take place on August 22nd at DC’s virtual FanDome event.

What do you think of the teaser for Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad video game? Are you looking forward to playing as Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc, Katana, Boomerang, Enchantress and more supervillains? Sound off in the comments.

Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
