7 Good Ways to Play Retro Games

Nostalgia has been a strong force in modern gaming for years. While many developers continue pushing out games with cutting-edge graphics, the old-school charm of pixel art and straightforward gameplay mechanics sways more players to play retro games from the past. However, many of the old retro consoles aren’t compatible with modern TVs. These are some of the good ways you can play retro games for a blast from the past.

Browser-Based Emulation

Browser-based emulation is undoubtedly the most convenient and economical way to play retro games. There are numerous websites that include embedded emulators for playing a multitude of NES, SNES, Genesis, Atari Lynx, DOS, Game Boy, and Atari 2600 games. For example, these are some of the websites where you can play retro games in your browser:

When you open some of those sites, you can get stuck into vast libraries of retro video games. Simply click on the emulators to select their start options. Then you can select fullscreen options to expand their displays.

Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s primary subscription service for playing retro video games. With Nintendo Switch Online, you can play many classic retro games on consoles like the SNES, NES, and N64 on the Switch. However, you’ll also need to upgrade to the Expansion Pack to unlock the full Switch Online retro gaming library. These are some of the retro console games that the service enables you to play:

  • NES
  • Super NES
  • Nintendo 64
  • Game Boy Advance
  • Game Boy

Retro Games on PC

Steam includes a vast library of retro Windows PC games dating back to the 1990s. For example, Half-Life is one of the classic retro games available on Steam. • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  • Half-Life 2
  • Quake

  • Deus Ex
  • Half-Life

If the old PC games haven’t been updated for Windows 11 compatibility, some backward compatibility issues can arise. The best way to address that is to run old Windows games in compatibility mode. To do that, right-click their shortcuts or EXE files to select Properties > Compatibility > Run this program in compatibility mode.

Retro Game Remakes

The increasing demand to play retro games has prompted many publishers and developers to release more remakes. Remakes are relaunched versions of classic retro games that typically have updated graphics, sound, and gameplay features. However, these games typically retain the exact gameplay of their original titles. These are some of the more notable retro game remakes you can play today:
