8 of the Best SEGA Games of the 20th Century

During the 20th century, SEGA produced iconic titles for both consoles and arcades. SEGA’s games and consoles attracted a large fanbase in the 1990s, a brief golden era for the company behind Sonic. These are the finest SEGA games from the 20th century.

Sonic the Hedgehog

The first Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in the early 1990s and quickly became SEGA’s flagship game series. Sonic supplanted Alex Kidd as SEGA’s mascot. The initial game was a 2D platformer, renowned for its speed and dynamic gameplay. It spawned numerous sequels like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, along with various spin-offs. Sonic the Hedgehog remains SEGA’s flagship and, after Super Mario, is considered one of the greatest platform series.

Daytona USA

Daytona USA was first released for the arcades in the early 1990s and emerged as one of the biggest arcade hits of the 1990s. This racing game had a variety of detailed and exciting tracks that up to eight players could race on. An arcade conversion was also released for the Saturn as one of its launch titles. More recently, Daytona USA has been re-released in the arcades as SEGA Racing Classic, which is essentially the same game but with a higher resolution. Along with Ridge Racer, Daytona is one of the best arcade racing games in history.

Virtua Fighter

The first Virtua Fighter game was released in the early 1990s and set a new trend for arcade combat games. This was one of the first fighting games in 3D that established the Virtua Fighter series. Aside from its innovative third dimension, players loved Virtua Fighter because of its realistic combat engine and revolutionary gameplay mechanics, such as ring-out victories.

Virtua Fighter 2

Virtua Fighter 2 took its fighting game series to a new level by removing the flat polygons from the original Virtua Fighter. This game featured fully textured, high-resolution 3D graphics that were a notable enhancement over the original Virtual Fighter. Aside from its significant graphical enhancements, Virtual Fighter 2 was also a faster, more responsive game with a somewhat higher frame rate than the original. It also incorporated an enhanced combat system and new game content. SEGA ported both Virtua Fighter games onto the Saturn, which were decent conversions.

Alex Kidd

Aside from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, Alex Kidd is one of SEGA’s longest game series that helped to establish the Master System as an alternative to the NES game console. In the 1980s, Alex Kidd was the SEGA mascot, and some Alex Kidd games were released on the Master System during the 1980s. While the game series was discontinued by SEGA in the early 1990s, it was perhaps the Master System’s top game title.

Streets of Rage 2

Streets of Rage 2 was one of the best SEGA games on the Genesis during the 1990s, which set a gold standard for side-scrolling beat ‘em ups. This was a great game because of its fluid combat system and audiovisual excellence for its time. Streets of Rage 2 had one of the most iconic soundtracks in gaming history that mixed house, techno, and electro dance music from the 1980s. It was an altogether superior sequel to the original Streets of Rage with its diverse level design, two-player co-op gameplay, and significant graphical overhaul.

Sonic Adventure

Sonic Adventure was the first true 3D Sonic game that began a new era for its franchise at a time when SEGA consoles were in serious decline. It effectively converted the speed from the 2D Sonic games into a new 3D space with momentum-based gameplay. Dreamcast players loved the immersive soundtrack, gameplay variety with varied character campaigns, and responsive controls in Sonic Adventure. However, the 3D factor was undoubtedly the biggest highlight of Sonic Adventure, which was a quantum leap in visuals for games of its time, with its vibrant, detailed environments and cinematic sequences that set a new standard for platformers.

SEGA Rally

SEGA Rally was yet another groundbreaking racing game that dominated the arcade scene alongside Daytona during the 1990s. This was a game that combined realistic physics and arcade thrills with its slide-happy drift controls. The revolutionary surface physics in SEGA Rally enhanced its gameplay with surfaces that genuinely affected vehicle handling. It was a game of fabulous visual quality for its time, with sharp, colorful graphics. SEGA Rally’s stunning 3D graphics, memorable soundtrack, accessibility, and drift-heavy gameplay made it an arcade and console classic.

Those were a few of the best SEGA games of the 20th century. Alex Kidd, Virtua Fighter 1 and 2, SEGA Rally, Sonic Adventure, Daytona, and Sonic the Hedgehog were all great SEGA game titles for both consoles and in the arcades. Such SEGA games raised the bar for arcade and console gaming and have an enduring legacy.
