8 of the Greatest Video Game Characters

The greatest video game characters are the stars of some of the best game franchises and mascots for their respective game consoles, developers, or publishers. Some of the biggest names in the industry have their marketable mascots, such as Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft, and Sony. These are some of the greatest video game characters in history.

Mario: Universal Ambassador

Mario is an American-Italian plumber who has starred in countless Mario platform games and is Nintendo’s mascot. He made his debut during the early 1980s in the game Donkey Kong. Among his first games was Super Mario Bros for the NES, which was the first game of the all-conquering Mario platform game series.

Since then, Mario has also starred and featured in a variety of game titles beyond the platform games, such as Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, and Paper Mario. Aside from his games, Mario has starred in comics, animated series, and three movies. Although the live-action Super Mario Bros movie was a flop, his Illumination animated films have had much greater box office impact.

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Super Speedy Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog became the official Sega mascot in the early 1990s with his Master System platform game titled Sonic the Hedgehog. Since then, there have been many further Sonic the Hedgehog platform games. These platform games have become some of the best alternatives to the Mario platform games, featuring super-fast and slick gameplay.

In more recent times, Sonic has shared games with Mario on Nintendo game consoles, such as Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. Like Mario, Sonic has also featured in animated series, such as The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and other cartoons.

The Master Chief: Modern Sci-Fi Hero

The Master Chief has become the game mascot for Microsoft’s Xbox game console. His original Halo Evolved game, and the Halo series, are regarded as the best Xbox titles and some of the best games generally. The Master Chief is a super soldier in the Halo game series, who battles against the Covenant alongside his fellow marines. In a cyber suit, the Master Chief seems more like a robot, with various armaments. Aside from the hit Halo game series, there are also various Halo novels and short animated movies.

Crash: Genetically Advanced Bandicoot

Crash is a genetically turbocharged bandicoot who starred in the Sony game series Crash Bandicoot. With the rise of the Sony PlayStation, Crash became the console’s mascot with his 3D platform game series. Beyond the platform games, there have also been a variety of Crash racing games, such as Crash Team Racing, similar perhaps to Mario Kart games.

Lara Craft: Sexy Archaeologist

Players voted Lara Croft to be the most iconic video game character of all time in a BAFTA poll. She is the British archaeologist who stars in the Tomb Raider game series. Her Tomb Raider game series, based primarily on tomb-based exploration, is among the foremost action-adventure franchises. Lara injected more sex appeal into video gaming during the 1990s, making her especially lovable for male players.

As a thrill-seeking treasure-hunting archaeologist, she’s kind of like a female Indiana Jones. This Indy parallel no doubt inspired a trilogy of Lara Croft live-action movies. The first Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was a big box office hit, but the follow-ups didn’t have quite as much cinematic impact.

Ryu: Martial Artist and Founder of Competitive Gaming

Ryu has been the starring character in all the Street Fighter games throughout the gaming decades. He is the wandering martial artist with an instantly recognizable white gi and red hairband. This is one of the greatest video game characters who quite literally established the foundation of fighting game mechanics with his Hadouken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku special move set, which numerous other Street Fighter clones have replicated. As the central protagonist of the blockbuster Street Fighter series, Ryu is today a Capcom marketing icon.

Pac-Man: The Original Pop Icon

Pac-Man is a yellow, pie-shaped character who eats up balls and evades ghosts across maze-based levels. Toru Iwatani designed this character to attract a broader demographic of players in the more male-dominated arcades of the 1980s. Pac-Man was the character who humanized gaming in a game that made a refreshing change from the space and war-themed coin-op shooters of its era.

Pac-Man is among the greatest video game characters because he was the first significant mascot for global stardom. Pac-Man established a massive merchandising empire based on Namco’s gaming superstar, like Nintendo’s Mario and Disney’s Mickey Mouse. He was the first gaming pop icon to spawn hit songs, animated shows, and a plethora of surrounding merchandise.

Link: The Silent Protagonist

Link has been the start of Nintendo’s Zelda series since it began on the NES during the 1980s. This Shigeru Miyamoto character is a silent protagonist into whom players project themselves, a little like an avatar. Link is one of the greatest video game characters in history as an embodiment of courage and heroism. The greatest legacy of Link is how he’s been at the forefront of exploration in gaming in one of Nintendo’s finest franchises, from the original top-down perspective to the glorious 3D of Breath of the Wild.

Link is also set to become a Hollywood superstar with a live-action Legend of Zelda movie in production. That movie is scheduled to hit the box office in April and May 2027. It is expected that Link will probably break his silence in that Zelda movie.

The greatest video game characters in history have been influential stars in some of the foremost gaming franchises. In terms of video games and cultural impact, they are the greatest protagonists in gaming history. For Nintendo, Sony, Sega, Namco, Capcom, and the Microsoft Xbox, those characters have starred in some great game titles for their respective game consoles.
