Last month may have seen a massive GTA 6 leak, one which saw 90 videos that a hacker posted from “illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from [Rockstar’s] systems,” but developer Rockstar and parent company remain certain that the GTA 6 leak will not affect the development of the highly anticipated next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series.
“With regards to the leak, it was terribly unfortunate, and we take those sorts of incidents very seriously indeed,” said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick in the company’s fiscal Q2 2023 earnings report.
“There’s no evidence that any material assets were taken, which is a good thing, and certainly the leak won’t have any influence on development or anything of the sort, but it is terribly disappointing and causes us to be ever more vigilant on matters relating to cybersecurity.”
The GTA 6 leak situation started when a user named teapotuberhacker posted the aforementioned 90 videos of footage which included alleged open-world gameplay from an alpha build of GTA 6 to GTAForums.com. The hacker further posted screenshots from what they purported to be from the game, which saw the a male and female protagonist robbing a diner, a scene which took place inside of a strip club and the main character interacting with various NPCs.
A suspect in the GTA 6 leak was arrested on “suspicion of hacking,” and later charged with “two counts of breach of bail conditions and two counts of misuse of a computer” as part of an investigation conducted by the FBI and the UK’s Cyber Crime Unit. The suspect pleaded “not guilty” to both charges.
While the GTA 6 will have no impact on the game’s development according to Rockstar and Take-Two, the game still has no official release date and probably won’t be ready until sometime in 2024 at the earliest, with 2025 or even 2026 as the likeliest timetable.
Do you think the GTA 6 leak was devastating to the game’s release schedule? Or is it too early in the game’s development to have any significant, lasting effects? Let us know what you think in the comments.
Ninja Gaiden was my rite of passage at an early age. After finally beating that game (and narrowly dodging carpal tunnel) I decided to write about my gaming exploits. These days I enjoy roguelikes and anything Pokemon but I'll always dust off Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country and StarFox 64 from time to time to bask in their glory.
